Lion with cubs from a medieval Bestiary

The original is from an illuminated manuscript, The Rochester Bestiary. I have carved the lion in relief and applied layers of gesso and bole to the carving before painting with gouache and water gilding. 250 x 170 x 53mm.

Detail of lion and cubs

The male lion breathes life into his cubs three days after their birth. The original image comes from a Bestiary and is an allegory representing the power of God to resurrect his son Christ on the third day after his death.
